Digital Product Passports: New EU Standards and DPP Registry

Digital Product Passports: Two Key Milestones Towards Implementation

Since our previous Digital4Sustainability Community article on Digital Product Passports in May, the European DPP landscape has continued to develop. Two important pieces of the framework are now in place: the first series of eight European DPP standards is complete, and the EU’s central Digital Product Passport Registry is live.

Milestone 01

The first series of eight European DPP standards is now complete

CEN-CENELEC’s Joint Technical Committee 24 has developed the first series of eight European standards supporting the Digital Product Passport system. Six of the standards were published in May 2026, and with the publication of the remaining two, the complete series of eight standards is now available.

The standards address different parts of the DPP system, including identification, data carriers, data exchange, storage, interoperability, access rights, security and data authentication. The requirements in the standards link directly to the legislation, helping organisations understand how to meet the applicable legal requirements.

Why does a common framework matter?

Digital Product Passports will need to work across different systems, organisations and value chains, rather than within one company or one technical solution. The standards provide the horizontal framework needed to support this interoperability.

The standards provide the horizontal framework for the DPP system. The actual product information required in a DPP will be introduced progressively through EU legislation for different product groups.

Milestone 02

The EU’s central DPP Registry is live

Another important development came on 20 July 2026, when the European Commission launched the central Digital Product Passport Registry, together with a testing environment for economic operators.

The Registry is part of the digital infrastructure behind the DPP system. The product information itself remains decentralised, while the Registry handles the registration of unique product identifiers and associated metadata.

Taken together, the Registry and the new standards show that DPP is moving beyond the regulatory framework towards the infrastructure needed to make it work in practice.

Preparing for DPP

What does this mean for organisations?

The exact DPP requirements and timelines will depend on the relevant product group as product-specific rules are introduced progressively.

But organisations do not need to wait for every requirement to be defined before they start preparing.

A practical place to start

Begin by looking at the product information your organisation already has:

  • Where is it stored?
  • How does it move between internal systems, suppliers and customers?
  • Who is responsible for maintaining it?
  • Where are the gaps or dependencies?

This work can also be valuable beyond compliance. More structured and interoperable product information can improve traceability and support repair, reuse, remanufacturing and recycling, as well as new circular services and business models.

DPP readiness is therefore about more than introducing a new digital tool. It is also about building the organisational and digital capabilities needed to manage and exchange reliable product information throughout the product lifecycle.

Free guide to the European DPP standards

For organisations wanting to better understand the European DPP standardisation framework, a free guide to the DPP standards is available through the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS).

The guide provides an accessible overview of the eight European standards and how they relate to the wider DPP system.
